Owen Pallett - Heartland

Something about this album I find deeply appealing. Perhaps owing to its fantastical qualities, it's a nice break from what everyone else is doing, and stepping into the imagination of a single artist, which is precisely what Pallet strikes me as, an obsessed craftsmen. Usually that leads to a mess of failed experiments, loosely strung together with some pretentious concept the band can comfortably accuse me of simply not getting when I think their shit sucks.

I am thinking of who to add to that list just now, and names elude me. I'm not yet through my first cup of coffee.

Pallet throws hooks left and right, but never beats you over the head with them, a style you find among the great composers of old. I personally fucking hate a band that has one good idea and loops the shit out of it for 5 LONG minutes (I'm looking at you Ladytron). Now I have to find old shit under the Lawyer killed previous moniker of 'Final Fantasy', which should make finding his new stuff easier.

I like this album better than the new Vampire Weekend (which is hardly saying anything), Spoon, or Ok Go albums. Maybe I am just burned out on the cutting edge of convention. But, it should be pointed out that I got hooked for a good minute on that Max Tundra joint of last year, or was it the year before? I just hate it when something good turns into what everyones doing in a couple of months. I don't care that that's the way things are done, not just this moment anyway.
